Visitors to the Elliot's Beach in Besant Nagar and the residents of a slum in Neelankarai were treated to a street play by members of the NSS Unit and Nature Club of the Kumararani Meena Muthiah College of Arts and Science recently. The play was part of the initiative by the college to preserve the ecosystem. “The street play, which stressed the importance of protecting our environment and, thereby, the ecosystem, was organised in connection with the International Year of Biodiversity and was stage in different parts of the city,” said P.T. Vijayshree, principal of the college.

She said the play laid emphasis on the hazards to the ecosystem as a result of modern day advancements.

Birds such as the sparrow are a rare sight in the city nowadays due to the mushrooming of cell phone towers. If birds could be affected, what is the fate of human beings? This was the concern voiced through the street play. The play focused on enforcing and enhancing the responsibility of everyone in society to save Mother Nature.
