Hoisting of the tricolour, culture programmes, singing of patriotic songs, sports and other events with patriotic fervour marked the Republic Day celebration all over the southern suburbs of Chennai.
At Nanganallur Lakshmi Nagar, Hema Bharani Prasad, Chennai Corporation Councillor of Ward No. 167, hoisted the National Flag at Lakshmi Nagar Park, Nanganallur. V. Rama Rao, secretary welcomed the gathering.
S. Suresh, committee member conducted a quiz. T. Ayyamperumal, president, P. Vijay Kumar, vice-president, and M.V. Subramanian, chairman, night patrolling wing, requested the gathering to volunteer for enrolling in community policing. R. Venkatachalam, joint treasurer, thanked the gathering.
The association also paid tributes to N.S. Radhakrishnan (80), who passed away recently. He was captain for Monday night patrol team of Lakshmi Nagar Civic Welfare Association.
He served as a volunteer in night patrol team for the past 16 years. He had a unique approach of attracting night patrol team volunteers by offering refreshments between midnight and 3 a.m. He was much respected by the Police Department for his sincere night patrolling service at this age.
Jain Nagar Residents Welfare Association in Chromepet celebrated Republic Day and also the association’s annual sports day. Events included running race, memory games and talent search competitions for children and lucky corner and quiz for elders.
Association president hoisted the National Flag and sweets were distributed. Krishnammal, wife of (late) P.T. Ramachandran, past president gave away prizes to winners of the sports events. Vignesh and Sanjaya Kumar of the association thanked S.N. Opticals for sponsoring the prizes.
At Nanganallur Easter Sector, Professor K. Periannan was the chief guest at the celebrations. Along with him, Kovai Murali, singer, were felicitated on the occasion. B.Sridhar and other office-members of the association were present.
Republic Day was celebrated in a grand manner in Zion Group of Schools and Alwin Memorial Public School. Group Captain Rhone D’Couta, during his key note address, emphasized on the participation of youth in exercising their social responsibilities towards building a strong nation and rooting out corruption.
The youth should actively involve in exercising their voting franchise to elect leaders of integrity, honesty to provide corruption free governance.
Wing Commander Watts Evans and Group Captain S.Sridhar hoisted the flag in the group of schools and greeted the parents and children on this occasion. N.Vijayan, correspondent and principal of the school, was present.
Many other voluntary organisations too conducted blood donation camps and also distributed aid to differently-abled people. Chiefs of urban and local bodies hoisted the National Flag in their respective offices.
