Soka Ikeda College of Arts and Science for Women conducted its 11th sports meeting on March 5.
V. Mahadevan, Assistant Director of Physical Education, University of Madras accepted the salute of the march past contingent, after the ceremonial hoisting of flag and the lighting of torch ceremony.
The oath taking ceremony saw the participants promising to take part in all events with proper sporting spirit. The chief guest declared the sports meet open by symbolically letting doves fly.
Mr. Mahadevan, in his address, stressed the importance of a sound mind in a sound body. “Physical activity is extremely important to tone our body and keep us in good spirit.” Quoting from Swami Vivekananda, he said that the power to achieve is latent in each and every individual. He asked the students to imbibe self-confidence and social adjustment to come up in life.
Acquiring knowledge and being dedicated towards one's work will surely help to achieve success. He stressed the importance of being loyal to one's alma mater, which inculcated various skills in us. Various track and field events were conducted and prizes distributed to the winners.
S. Kavitha from Tamil Nadu Special Police Force and a sports personality, lauded the efforts of the students in pursuing physical activities along with the academic achievements. While reading out the annual sports report, the physical director of the college, K. Padma Priya, highlighted the achievements of the college for the academic year 2010- 11. The report said that many students were selected to represent the University of Madras in various events. An inter-school sports meet, “Ikeda Trophy” was conducted to identify and nurture sportsmanship among young athletes of Thiruvalluvar District. Kendriya Vidyalaya bagged the trophy and certificates and cash prizes were distributed to the winners.
College chairman Sethu Kumanan, secretary Kogilam Kumanan, educational advisor P. Ranjithakani and college principal Rani Christhu Dhas, academic advisor of the college, C. Ashokan, vice-principal, Meera Murugesh and principal of Sethu Bhaskara Matriculation Higher Secondary School, S. P. P. Selvakumar participated.
P. Paramashakthi of III Computer Science and sports committee president proposed a vote of thanks.
