The 12th Samskruta Nataka Utsav was held at the Sri Dakshinamurthy Auditorium, P.S. Higher Secondary School, Mylapore, on October 23. The event was jointly conducted by Dharmakesari Solar K.S. Subramaniya Iyer Trust and Lioness Club of Nandambakkam. The function started with the lighting of traditional lamp by S.J. Sudha, Lioness Council, Chairperson 2010 – 2011. Almost 300 students from 14 city schools took part in events such as Sanskrit skit, kathakalakshepam, sloka antyakshari, Amarakosha recitation and dance. The kathakalashepam was based on Ramayana and Mahabharatha. The dance items were based on krithis in Sanskrit composed by Sri Venkatakavi Dikshithar and other well-known Sanskrit poets.

The first prize was bagged by P.S. Senior Secondary School, second by P.S.B.B, T.P.Road and the third prize was shared by P.S.B.B K.K.Nagar and P.S.B.B Nungambakkam.

The Best Theme Fusion Award went to P.S.B.B Nungambakkam. Awards for Best Comprehensive Play, Best Educative Theme and Best Comedy were also given.

The Best Actor award went to Shreyas of P.S. Senior Secondary School who acted as Chanakya. The best actress award went to Shruthi of P.S.B.B School, T.P.Road, who acted as Pandita Kavi and Smruthi who acted as Kalidasa.

In the antyakshari competition (juniors), PSBB T.P.Road, got the first prize and P.S. Senior received the second prize. In the antyakshari competition (seniors), Kola Saraswathi came first and PSBB came second.

In the Amarakosham competition, PSBB T.P.Road team A got the first prize followed by team B and PS Senior. In the Bharatanatyam competition, PSBB T.P. Road got the first prize, PSBB Nugambakkam came second and PS Senior won the third place. Pon Vidyashram received the consolation prize.

In the Kathakalakshepam competition, P.S. Senior got the first prize, PSBB Nugambakkam got the second and PSBB T.P. Road got the third slot. Pon Vidyashram received the consolation prize.

The prizes were distributed by C.S. Velmurugan at the valedictory function which was held on the same day.

Title conferred

N. Gopalakrishnan and Lioness K. Alamelu were guests of honour. Dr. R. Thygarajan, Retd. Reader and HOD, Sanskrit, Presidency College, presided. The title of Samskruta Ratna was conferred on Dr. O.R. Devanathan, lecturer, Presidency College, Chennai, by C.S. Radhakrishnan, Professor and HOD, Dept., of Sanskrit, Pondicherry University. V. Ramjee, News Editor, Makkal Kural, offered felicitations.

Music Festival

The 12th Devi Kanyakumari Music Festival Competition for school children was held on October 24 at Sri Dakshinamurthy Auditorium, Mylapore. About 35 city schools took part. The competition was open to all children under the auspices of DSKSSI Trust. It was based on the compositions of Jayalakshmi Sudarsan on Lord Muruga and rendered by O.S. Thyagarajan in a cassette titled ‘Aadi Vaa Murugaa'.

Deepa Kaliyur, IT professional, distributed the prizes. P.S. Srikant, CA, PSS and Co, felicitated the winners. Mr. Ramjee presided. In the junior boys category I and II, prize was won by Calibre Academy and the III by DAV Boys, Gopalapuram. In the junior girls, PSBB, K.K. Nagar, PSBB, T.P.Road and DAV won the I, II and III place respectively. Among the seniors, PSBB Nungambakkam won first and second, while the third place was shared by Calibre Academy, DAV and Jawahar Vidyalaya.

It was a twin programme on that day. A CD release function was held along with the Music Fest.

CD release

An audio CD ‘Srinivasam Smarami' was released by P. Varalakshmi, of TTD Information Centre, Chennai. The first copy was received by Nellai D. Subramanian, violinist. The CD is a compilation of compositions on Lord Venkateswara by the late Jayalakshmi Sudarsan, which have been rendered by singers Prakash and V.S. Badrinarayanan. S.B. Prabhakar Rao, ED – Corporate Affairs, The Sanmar Group, was the guest of honour.
