For weeks, motorists heading to Thiruvanmiyur station suffered due to a locked parking facility
Many motorists were in for a rude shock a couple of weeks ago when the two-wheeler parking space at Thiruvanmiyur MRTS station was shut without prior intimation. A note pasted outside the gate said that the term of the contract ended on September 10.
Although the covered basement parking leads to a fight for space daily, for many passengers coming in two-wheelers from Palavakkam, Valmiki Nagar, Perungudi and Besant Nagar, this is the only option. Many prefer to travel to the station in their own vehicles and leave them at the Southern Railway authorised parking space rather than depend on MTC buses or autorickshaws. The parking lot has space for only 150 vehicles, but it receives double the number. The station has no provision to park four-wheelers. “Usually, it is during the monsoon when the parking bay is inundated with water that we decide not to park here,” says Vinay Kumar, a regular to the station and its parking bay.
With the Southern Railway yet to identifiy the next contractor, commuters will be taking a risk if they park their vehicles at the station. A Railway spokesperson said the tender has been issued and it would take a few months before an authorised contractor is zeroed in on. On Thursday, the gates of the two-wheeler parking area was opened with a note that owner’s have to park at their own risk.
