Lucy takes her seat in front of the PC, reaches out to the headphones and logs on. The screen before her is soon full of mathematical figures, equations and calculations. The next few minutes seem magical. It is clear to the spectator that she is doing a test and the sums are being corrected with a nice red pen within the next few minutes. But where is the teacher who is monitoring her? Lucy is taking her lessons from UK and her tutor is in India. It has all been made easy by etutors which is managed by Sayee Manohar, Managing Director and Pankaj Vekria, CEO.

Online tutoring

etutors is a learning concept which delivers online education for students above seven years. It offers a high standard in online tutoring. With the latest technology, it is able to give a one-on-one personalised tutoring for students in the United Kingdom.

According to this, students are able to extend their studies beyond the classroom. The tutors are in turn able to identify the weak areas of the students and help to strengthen them.

In addition, the tutors also revise the lessons at the appropriate time and also assess them periodically.

The faculty with Sayee Manohar are highly qualified and guide the students in physics, chemistry, maths and biology. Teaching is done through a special software using an interactive whiteboard.

“What our children learn in Class VIII is learnt by them in Class X. Their syllabus is more application-oriented and they concentrate on fewer subjects compared to our syllabus,” says Shanmugam, maths teacher at etutors.

Sayee Manohar says, “Their education is based on the student's ability to grasp and learn by themselves. Also only after they master a particular lesson or concept, they move on to the next.”

With this kind of syllabus and format it approaches the students and it has turned out to be highly satisfactory from the parent point of view also. Report cards are sent regularly and the greatest advantage is that the parents can simultaneously see their wards attending classes and working on the concepts. The faculty is updated with the current syllabus. They are also given accent training.

As far as biology is concerned it involves a lot of power point presentations. With preserved specimens and charts, Dr. Prasad is able to emulate a real classroom online and gives a personal touch to his students. The tutors also guide the students with home assignments, elusive problems and while preparing for exams. Children can involve themselves in revision courses that can be taken on monthly, weekly or hourly basis.

“British students are very excited about this concept that there is a great demand for these classes which are charged ?20 an hour for one to four sessions. They have packages too. For five sessions and above it is ?18 and for more than 15 sessions it is ?15.”

Currently etutors is catering to the academic needs of Indian students of various boards (CBSE / ICSE / State Board) in terms of providing support for learning within and beyond the paradigms of the text. It has undertaken this project as an initiative to bring science closer, irrespective of the student's level of understanding. It is aimed at teaching scientific concepts through simple experiments.

It conducted a workshop this summer which had a rousing response from students and parents. In four days, children got acquainted with many scientific concepts. Experiments were conducted, theorems and formulas taught through paper folding method.

etutors has come up with a free monthly magazine — Education Matters — for school students. The magazine features articles on important topics of science and mathematics, which are relevant to the curriculum. It also provides a spectrum of quizzes, puzzles and games to engage the students in academic mood.

The first two issues have received positive feedback from parents, librarians and teachers of leading schools. It has come up with a new project ‘We Solve,' through which it helps students studying in Classes VI to X (of all boards) by clarifying doubts in their school projects.

It also assures that its faculty can shed light on tough chapters in maths and science within 24 hours through email at zero cost. Students can mail their doubts to
