Manned moon landing is by far the biggest technological feat by humans said V.P. Balagangadharan, group head, TTDG, Vikram Sarabhai Space Research, while speaking during the Moon landing day celebrations held at the Periyar Science and Technology Centre.
Around 150 students from various city schools celebrated the 41st anniversary of the first manned expedition to moon. The landing that took place on the July 20, 1969, was possible only after U.S. president John F. Kennedy envisioned it and set a time frame, he added.
“There is a proposal to develop a permanent space exhibition at the Periyar Science and Technology Centre in association with the ISRO. ISRO will provide the exhibits and information to the gallery where the concepts of space technology will be conveyed,” said P. Iyamperumal, executive director, Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre.
Stressing on the potential of research in Astronomy Mr. Iyamperumal said that the celebrations were organised to instigate student's interest in Astronomy.
A series of lectures and interactions were organised to increase awareness among students on the moon mission and future developments in the field of astronomy. Students who visited the Kennedy Space Centre, United States, also shared their experiences.
