Come Deepavali, the national festival symbolising the triumph of good over evil is celebrated by everyone all over India at the same time. Though shopping bags burst at the seams the size of wallets thin put rapidly.
There is not a more opportune moment for shopaholics to indulge and purchase all those goods they had been planning to buy and had been saving money for all this while. Apart from the traditional and mandatory goods that need to be bought for each household, Deepavali is also a season for people to buy their favourite articles, gifts for their friends and relatives.
Sweet shops, cracker outlets and why, even textile stores are not experiencing the kind of huge crowds that can be seen in consumer durable stores and mobile outlets, be it those belonging to leading firms or others started by small entrepreneurs.
Mobile phones are probably the most sought after gadget by the young and old alike. With models catering to every requirement flooding the market with each passing day, the customer indeed has become the king when it comes to buying a mobile handset.
“There was a time when there were only basic models that came at a huge price. Innovation led to an explosion in this segment and people can walk with a handset for a few hundred rupees or even several thousands,” pointed out M.Murali, a salesman of a small mobile outlet near Tambaram Sanatorium railway station.
Throw away prices
Recently, it has become common for manufacturers to introduce “fully loaded” mobile handsets at throw away prices. These handsets come with camera and movie recording facilities, radio and music players, bluetooth and even internet connectivity. Even branded versions of such handsets come at a price tag of less than Rs. 3,000.
Other than mobile handsets, the showrooms of leading consumer durable companies are doing brisk business as usual. However, the ones that are doing roaring business are those who have established temporary shops coinciding with the festival season. For instance, shops selling electric hot plates, pressure cookers of reputed companies offer them at the best prices and also give fabulous offers, that make it irresistible for customers.
“As Deepavali comes in the first week of the month, salaried sections can stretch their budget for spending on the festival as well as purchasing white goods as we also receive the yearly bonus by this time,” pointed out S.Balaji Kumar, a State government employee.
