Dr. M.G.R Educational and Research Institute, Maduravoyal, and IBM, Chennai organised a panel discussion on ‘Meeting the Industry Demand by Academia’ at Maduravoyal recently.

The event was organised by keeping in view of the gap in set of skills between industry requirements and the skills possessed by graduates.

Experts from academic and industrial domains are often concerned about lack of compatibility between the course curriculum and the relevance in the business world and an increased need for more practical exposure for the students to deliver better quality work. 

In order to identify concrete steps and then act on them to produce real results, a team of experts from the industry and the academia came together to deliberate on the topic.

The various experts include Director TN, NASSCOM, Purushothaman, Vice President-Banking and Financial Sector, Polaris FT, Sivahami Pavanasam, Vice-President, HCL Technologies, Balaji Prasad, Delivery Manager, Infosys, M. Ammayappan and Executive-Vice President, Open Wave Computing Services Private Limited, Srinivasan, kindled the knowledge resources with the university teachers and students.

The event was attended by faculty members and students from various colleges in Chennai. Through this panel discussion, Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute would like to spread the message among the local academic circles so that the ideas generated are taken forward and implemented.

Super Computing

“GARUDA – India’s National Grid Computing Initiative” was inaugurated recently at Dr. M.G.R Educational and Research Institute University, Maduravoyal, by Subrata Chattopadhyaya, Head C-DAC Knowledge Park, Bangalore, and by M.R. Rajagopalan, Director, C-DAC, Chennai.

This programme was conducted by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and Information Technology.

University President A.C.S. Arun Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, Meer Mustafa Hussain, Rector, G.Gopalakrishnan, Registrar, C.B. Palanivelu, Dean, E&T, Uma Rajaram, and Head, Department of CSE and IT, V. Cyrilraj, participated in the programme.

C-DAC has established the National PARAM Supercomputing Facility (NPSF) as a national facility to be used by the various industries and institutions that need supercomputing power to find solutions to their problems.

According to university officials, so far this enormous computing power was provided to institutions such as IIT, IISc and important national research centers and the university is proud to announce that Dr. M.G.R Educational and Research Institute University, is the only private university to take part in this initiative of High Performance Computing facility.

Boot camp

In continuation to this inauguration there was a Boot Camp Programme and the participants for this programme are the faculties and students from the various departments of the university. This camp focussed on the idea of how to access ‘GARUDA’ to solve research problems and how to use it as a resource.

The objective of the camp was to serve as an overview on Grid and detailed sessions on GARUDA Security and Tools and Services.
