Give priority to women’s safety: MP

“There is an urgent need for ensuring women protection in today’s life and men have a role to play to ensure this,” said Vasanthi Stanley, Rajya Sabha Member.

She was part of the seminar and awareness programme on “Sexual Harassment and Protection for Women”’ organised by National Service Scheme of Annai Violet Arts and Science College, Menambedu, Ambattur.

The programme began with a rally from Annai Anaadhai Illam to Mallika Mahal, Pudur, which was organised in collaboration with Lion’s Club of Chetpet, on February 23. Members of Women’s Self-Help Groups and students from neighbouring colleges participated.

Students displayed placards, which had smart and crisp slogans against women harassment.

They were led by the guest of the day, Ms. Vasanthi Stanley and College Chairman N. R. Dhanapalan. Poet K. Jyothi Ramalingam, S. P. Baskaran, S. Venkatraman, and K. S. Kannan, all from Lions Club of Chetpet participated in the rally, which sounded optimistic about ensuring women safety at any cost. College Secretary N. R. D. Prem Kumar, Joint Secretary P. E. R. Premchand, Principal Kamala Balakrishnan, Vice Principal Japhia Solomon, and other guests shared their views by voicing out their support for women’s empowerment.

NSS co-ordinators Uma Charulatha and Radha along with the programme organiser, Vanishree were also part of the event.

Principal Ms. Kamala Balakrishnan welcomed the gathering. A thought provoking skit was enacted by students to create awareness on women’s rights. Students from various colleges along with the staff members participated in the event.
