Actor Arya's presence in the Thalassemia Fund Raising Musical Nite gave an electrifying edge to the event conducted in the city on March 9. He is the brand ambassador of Thalassemia Project launched by the Rotary Clubs of Chennai Galaxy and Chennai Port City. Justice R.S. Ramanathan, Judge, Madras High Court; Dr. R. Nataraj Chairman-TNPSC and former District Governor Abhirami Ramanathan were present on the occasion.
The event was conducted by the Rotary Clubs towards raising funds for Tamil Nadu Thalassemia Welfare Association of Voluntary Health Services - TTK Blood Bank. As part of the show, Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to music director Dr. M.S. Viswanathan, and Carnatic vocalist Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna. Playback singers Vani Jayram, S.P. Shailaja, Tippu, Kovai Murali, Kalpana, Ananthu, Mukesh, and Airtel Super Signer winners Sai Charan and Krishna Murthy enthralled the crowd with songs.
Rotarian PHF C. Muthusamy, President, Rotary Club of Chennai Port City said that children with thalassemia suffer as the body makes reduced amounts of haemoglobin - the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. At present, monthly blood transfusions and bone marrow transplants are the treatments for thalassemic children. Under blood transfusion treatment, the children need to be on life-long medication to offset the side-effects of these transfusions.
