Age is just a number for Shahab Ahmed, who at sixty two is a popular swimming coach. A professional who earlier imparted training for swimmers for a span of twenty five years at the Ritz Hotel at Abids now teaches swimming at the Kalpa High School at Banjara Hills Road No. 7 now.
A familiar face for the people from the areas surrounding the Banjara Hills he remains preferred a lot by many.
“Ritz was the only hotel in the city those days that had a swimming pool though later a few other hotels started the facility. People from different backgrounds used to visit the swimming pool of the hotel and my work was to supervise the activity and impart training to learners,” he says.
He claims to be one of the oldest swimming coaches of those times from Hyderabad still active in the field. “I don't know any persons of those days who are still active in the sport. I teach even third generation family members of certain families. It is the trust and the satisfaction of the people,” says Shahab Ahmed.
“I am quiet satisfied with the way Shahab Sahab takes interest in imparting swimming to the children, my other children have already learned under his supervision,” says K. Madhav, a businessman from Banjara Hills.
Shahab feels happier on seeing that more and more children are taking it up as a sport activity unlike in the past when it served a mere recreational activity. “There are serious participants in the summer camps. Each vacation they move to an advanced stage,” he says.
