The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre (TNSTC) is setting up a DRDO Pavilion on TNSTC campus.
“The pavilion will showcase the works undertaken by the DRDO in more than its 50 laboratories across the nation in the field of aeronautics, armaments, electronics, combat vehicles, engineering systems, instrumentation, missiles, advanced computing and stimulation, special materials, naval systems, life sciences, training, information systems and agriculture,” Dr. P. Iyamperumal, Executive Director, Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre, said.
A model of a specialised clothing designed by DRDO, worn by the Indian soldiers deployed at Siachen Glacier, to protect themselves against the freezing temperature, which can even dip to minus 60 degree Celsius, will also be displayed at the pavilion, he pointed out.
Various models of gun, including the latest in the series of machine guns and AK47’s, historical developments of gun, construction of cut-section of gun, scale-down model of Brahmos1.3, a supersonic cruise missile, Prithvi, a tactical surface-to-surface short-range ballistic missile, Agni, a family of medium to intercontinental range ballistic missiles, electronic equipments, electronic radars, electronic and communication systems, and life-supporting devices will be showcased.
“An Interpretation Centre on DRDO, where a quiz on research activities undertaken by the Defence organisation will be conducted regularly. Armoured fighting vehicles, tanks, and automotive electronics of Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE) a laboratory of Defence Research Development Organisation, Avadi, are also coming up at the campus of the planetarium. The pavilion constructed at a cost of Rs.85 lakhs, will be completed in an another four-month’s time, “ Iyamperumal added.
DRDO sources said the gallery is set up to create an awareness about DRDO activities, achievements, strength in terms of technologies generated, and its high-quality infrastructure, among students as well as public at large.
The DRDO gallery will have a covered area of 5000-square feet in an existing building. Additional open space will be available for large life size models and exhibits. The DRDO has provided an initial one time fund towards modifications within the TNSTC premises, and creation of infrastructure. The Gallery will be made operational in the near future.
