‘When the children smiles, the country smiles', the quote of former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was made true, when the Lions Clubs International District 324 A6 organised a mega Deepavali Mela at Jaigopal Garodia National Higher Secondary School, East Tambaram, on November 3.

Members of Lions Clubs celebrated Deepavali with 400 children as they were all provided with dress materials, sweets and fire crackers. Lions District Governor, J.S. Vijayakumar, distributed the materials to the children and said that these underprivileged children needed the support from the community. The children were handpicked by the Lions Clubs.

On the evening of November 4, president of the Rotary Club of Chennai Velachery V. Balasundaram was joined by several members of the RCCVat Sai Samithi for the celebrations.

Sai Samithi (located on the 13th Main Road, Vijaya Nagar, Velachery) regularly conducts free tuition classes for underprivileged students.

“Some of them have secured admission in the reputed engineering colleges too,” said Kala Mohan, a chartered accountant and resident of Vijaya Nagar, who is one of the several volunteers regularly coaching the children.

Children from the local Chennai Higher Secondary School, St. Antony's School and other neighbouring schools participated in the function.
