The year-long celebration of the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, organised by Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai, has begun on January 12 and will end on January 12, 2014. As part of the celebration, teachings of Swami Vivekananda will be propagated to the general public and books on Swami Vivekananda will be sold at a subsidised price.

A model village in Meyyur, Chengalpet, is being created to improve the economy of the village with the active participation of the local people. Camps will be conducted across the State for teachers, students and auto-drivers, based on the teachings of Swamiji to lead a purposeful life. Sri Ramakrishna Math, Mylapore, will offer courses on Vivekananda, Hinduism and Sanskrit soon, Swami Vimurtananda, Editor, Sri Ramakrishna Vijayam, said. As many as 10 lakh students from 3,000 schools in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala took part in a competition titled ‘Learn Swamiji by Heart,’ conducted by ‘Sri Ramakrishna Vijayam,’ the monthly Tamil magazine of Sri Ramakrishna Math, Mylapore, in July last, for school and college students. The students were asked to recite and write the quotations of Swami Vivekananda. The competitions were conducted in English and Tamil. More than 15,000 students won prizes in the competition.

“The competition was conducted with an aim to instil values such as social responsibility, responsible citizens and others,” Vimurtananda pointed out.

The second part of the competition, ‘Practice Vivekananda,’ has begun this month. In this phase, any one of the sayings or teachings of the great saint will be mentioned in the magazine and the participants are expected to implement that principle in his or her everyday life and write their experience to the Math. The contest will test the participant on parameters such as physical strength, mental endurance, concentration, leadership qualities, patriotism, sacrifice, service and others.

The Math plans to conduct value-based classes to NSS and NCC students across Tamil Nadu. Besides, Vivekananda Youth Forum will conduct classes on works of the Swamiji. Classes on yoga and meditation, computer classes, tuition classes for students hailing from marginalised sections of the society will be conducted at Vivekanandar Illam, Triplicane.
