At 60, ‘Kailash’ Mama went to Kailash and got hooked to the place. He has now gone there more than 25 times. The octogenarian talks to VIPASHA SINHA about these trips

His neighbours call him ‘Kailash’ Mama. A visit to his apartment in Bhaktavasalam Nagar, Adyar explains why.

The walls of his living room are covered with pictures of Mount Kailash and of Mansarovar lake, along with detailed maps. This 83-year-old has visited Kailash Mansarover more than 25 times.

He made his first trip in 1991, at the age of 60, and has been a regular visitor ever since. Born as G. Vishwanathan Shastry, ‘Kailash’ Mama has taken many pilgrimages to Amarnath, Badri-Kedar Nath and to many other sacred shrines in the Himalayas.
