By the time a student enters Class X, he or she should have a clear idea of their area of interest. Anxious parents try to influence the young minds with their own ideas.

Most of them want their wards to pursue science _ engineering and medicine, giving the child little time to explore other subjects.

“There are plenty of opportunities emerging in the accounts and finance,” says K. N. Ramaswamy, founder of RR Academy, Nungambakkam.

Mr. Ramaswamy visits schools and colleges to create an awareness about these subjects among children. He does not want commerce education to take a back seat as science has emerged as most favourite. This move of his is well-appreciated by principals of schools and colleges. “My target is children of class IX and X as it will inspire them to take up the subject in plus two.”

According to him advantages of choosing the subject is one needs to spend less fees, there is no entry restriction in colleges, earning while learning is possible while doing courses such as CA, ICWA and ACS.

Ramaswamy imparts training to students for professional courses (CA/ICWA /ACS) at his institute. Special features of the academy are individual attention, material for all subjects, cycle tests, guest lectures, library after class, week-end classes if necessary and above all a friendly atmosphere. As far as ACS coaching is concerned, they provide exclusive coaching from foundation to final. They attract students from Andhra, Kerala, Orissa and Vijayawada. The academy also offers jobs through its placement cell by getting help from its alumni.

The academy provides scholarships to meritorious and poor students in all the three courses. The academy is one of the few to arrange hostel facilities for girls and boys coming from interior Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Vijayawada and Orissa.

They provide exceptional material for accountancy, economics, law, management, costing and tax. ACS coaching runs in four batches and an effective faculty handles classes for subjects such as Company Law, Cost & Management Accounts, Company Accounts & Auditing practices, industrial, labour and general laws, secretarial audit, financial treasury and forex management and so on. The academy has produced All India ranks in ACS Inter and ACS – Foundation.

Another milestone in ICWA stream is they have obtained the first rank in Tamil Nadu and All India 12{+t}{+h}rank in ICWA final.

Similarly, they have obtained ranks in ICWA foundation also. Many of their students have obtained distinctions in CA foundation and CPT (CA-Foundation exam). In 2006, the academy produced 9 ranks at the All India level. In 2004, they obtained the All India first rank in ICWA. In 1997 the academy has produced the All India first rank in ACS finals.

Recently, the academy got accreditation from the Institute of Company Secretaries of India and from the Chartered Institute Management Accounts, London, a globally recognised accounting body. From 2002, the academy has been conducting an exam in accounts for +2 students involving nearly 5,000 students from 150 schools at a number of centres all over Chennai, during the first week of January. Results are declared through their website, marks are sent to students and toppers are honoured during the first week of February.

The exam is based on both State board and CBSE syllabus. This will be like a pre-board paper through which the student will be exposed to a paper by a certified body.

Students will also gain the experience of writing an exam in a different atmosphere and evaluation will be done by professionals.

Those who secure 80 per cent and above in the exam will be given scholarship to pursue CA / ICWA and ACS at RR Academy.

History

The academy was begun in 1993 by K. N. Ramaswamy (then a commerce professor) and M. Ramesh, a chartered accountant. Hailing from villages near Tirupathur, they wanted to provide personal attention to students who wanted to pursue these privileged courses.

Though they began with hardly five students, the number slowly grew over the years and the institute also began to produce ranks. The academy is located at 2, Noor Veerasamy Street, Nungambakkam. Ph: 4206 8425.

One can call 98411 09332 / 09410 18072 / 99412 98973 to join the classes. Email: therracademy@rediffmail.com.
