Fifteen students from Bharath University bagged awards under various categories at the recently held RoboCup Singapore Open 2011 competition.
Around 500 students divided in 101 teams competed to win the first spot at this international arena.
RoboCup Singapore Open 2011 was held at the Singapore Science Centre where students displayed their original concepts in Robotics.
Bharath University students won the first place with their original creation — “Robo Truck” in the Rescue Robot category. Robo Truck can operate under all types of weather and land conditions.
It is operated by a wireless communication system and can run as far as 2-3 km.
RoboCup Rescue is designed specifically to promote research in employing robotics in the field of rescue and other situations.
The university bagged the second place in the Robo Soccer creation. The Humanoid Robo “Oasis” was created and programmed to play soccer against other robots at the competition. The robot was programmed to recognise the ball and react to it.
The ultimate goal of the RoboCup project is to develop a team of fully autonomous humanoid robots by 2050 that can win against the human world champion team in soccer.
‘Oasis also had won second place in the @ Home category. RoboCup @Home category works on real-world applications and human-machine interaction with autonomous robots.
Lakshmi Narayanan, Chancellor, Bharath University, said: “We are proud to see our students excel in Robotics at an international arena.”
Jaishankar Bharatharaj, founder and Managing Director of Roboin said: “Roboin has been associated with colleges and schools in search of young talents who are interested in the field of Robotics. Roboin will be training students from Bharath University and a few other institutions for participating in the Robotics World Championship to be held at Turkey in July.”
The students also conducted a live demonstration of the Robo Truck and Humanoid Robot. RoboCup Singapore Open is an annual national robotic competition to promote interest and exchanges of ideas in Robotics, Artificial Intelligence and related technologies in Singapore; keeping in line with the international research and education initiative.
