In a few months from now, Chennai city's automobile spare parts dens in Pudupet and Chintadripet area would lose its commercial identity. Over 1600 shop owners, including automobile resellers and spare part dealers, are preparing to shift business to a comprehensive zone – the Auto Nagar at Appur village near Singaperumal Koil.

Spare part outlets on South Cooum Road, West Cooum Road, East Cooum Road all in Chintadripet and Harris Road and adjoining streets in Pudupet that have been operating for years, houses over 1,800 small and big dealers catering to all kinds of auto parts requirements for two-wheelers, three-wheelers, cars and heavy vehicles.

Orders issued

Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB) had planned to relocate the shops along the Cooum River to facilitate the proposed construction of the elevated collider connecting Chennai Port to Maduravoyal. According to TNSCB sources, relocation orders were issued to 458 shops on South, West and East Cooum Road earlier. “A 41.77-acre land in Appur village near Singaperumal Koil in Kancheepuram district was identified for them to relocate and form an Auto Nagar where all the spare parts and automobile reselling market would come under one roof,” said a senior TNSCB official.

Meanwhile, another 1,199 automobile dealers and shop owners including those from Harris Road in Pudupet expressed their desire to relocate and set shop in the proposed auto nagar. Representatives from the dealer unions met the government officials concerned, who in turn have decided to accommodate these dealers who had setup business before 2006 in the city.

TNSCB has now identified a total of 1,657 persons as eligible dealers to receive land in Auto Nagar. “The enumeration process is now underway. Filled application forms with photographs and proof of identity of eligible dealers have been obtained and further processing is going on,” added the official.

Twenty per cent of the value of the land allotted to each dealer would be collected from them. The beneficiaries have to remit the rest of the amount in instalments. However, sources said that the 458 dealers, indentified initially, are trying for a fee waiver for the relocation.

A tender for development work including laying drinking water pipeline, storm water drain and other amenities at the Appur village has been floated and is scheduled to be finalised in a few days, sources added.
