Award-winning works to figure in the newly-opened Craft Museum at Poompuhar

Lovers of arts and crafts have one more reason to drop in at Poompuhar on Anna Salai, any time of the year – a Craft Museum. The facility, which functions from a building attached to the showroom, showcases a raft of art and craft items, including award-winning works. The Musuem, which opened last week, is primarily aimed at promoting the traditional art forms of Tamil Nadu and providing a platform for aspiring artists.

A large bronze icon made by A.S. Sambadamurthy welcomes visitors as one enters the 400 sq.ft. room. A number of other works by the craftsman, who specialises in Chola style of icon making, is also exhibited.

Sculpture of Siva in a seated position, intricate Tanjore work glittering on a traditional pot and a light-weight model of Sri Brihadeeswara Temple, Tanjore, made with plantain pith are some of the award-winning works that are sure to get noticed. A spiral staircase takes visitors to another storehouse of crafts made from black stone and banana fibre.

The works of these artists are also on sale.

Award-winning artists from the State who want their works to be displayed can contact the Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation.
