The Taj Mahal exhibition being held at the YMCA grounds in Kottivakkam on the Rajiv Gandhi Salai is proving to be a hit, as it is drawing hundreds of eager visitors daily.
The expo has stalls selling articles from consumer durables to dress materials, fashion jewellery and toys, as well as mouth-watering eatables. For adventure seekers, the entertainment segment of the expo offers a variety of rides for children as well as adults.
The main attraction here is the replica of the Taj Mahal at Agra. S. Praveena, a 12-year-old who has seen monument only in photos, finds the replica amazing and “wonderfully done.”
Anwar, manager at the expo, says that the replica of the Taj Mahal was erected over one and a half months at a cost of Rs. 40 lakhs. Enthused by the public response, he says the exhibition will be back next year.
While visitors stroll around stalls selling stuff such as curtains, bed spreads, toys, electronic items and packed food items, huge crowds gather at the ticket counters for rides that promise them a ‘mind blowing' experience.
Giant wheel, children's train, carousel, pirate ship, swings and other rides are much sought after by the young and the old alike. A magic show stall is another attraction for the kids. The entry fee has been economically priced, with the organisers charging Rs. 40 for adults and Rs. 20 for children. For amusement rides, the ticket is Rs. 30 per person.
R.H. Mohana, a resident of Perungudi, said that the organisers should make this exhibition an annual affair, so that people in south Chennai would not have to go all the way to the Island Grounds to enjoy such an outing. The expo is open from 4.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. till June 5.
