How it happened

A native of Kalkondampatti in Madurai, I came to Chennai with the hope of becoming an actor. I did Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture at the Government Arts College. Later, I joined art director Sabu Siril and worked with him on the film Boys where I met director Balaji Sakthivel, then an associate of director Shankar. He asked me to work as art director for his film Kadhal and it turned out to be a mega hit. Because of my urge to act, I made it a point to appear in at least a couple of scenes in all the films I worked as art director. When I got a call from Navi Satish Kumar who directed Veerasekaran, I thought I was being approached for art direction. Instead, he told me to play the hero in his film. What a pleasant surprise it was!

How it felt

As I was passionate about films, I used to wonder how my name would look on screen. I would get hold of reels and put my name on them after scraping away the original names; when light passed through them, my name would get projected on the white wall of our house, giving me immense pleasure. When Kadhal was screened at Prasad preview theatre, I was delighted to see my name for the first time on screen. And Veerasekaran was a dream-come-true.

How life changed

When Kadhal released, people from Madurai and neighbouring places helped publicise the film. When my first film as hero, Veerasekaran, released, again I got publicity through word of mouth. Their gesture touched my heart. I'm happy my people have not forgotten me. I have done some of the best films such as Veyil, Dishyum, Vazhthukkal, Poo, Pandi and Sarithiram. I'm acting in two films now, of which one is directed by Ramesh, an associate of director Samy.
