I never argue with any director. That’s why I’m never out of work
How is the Tamil film industry doing these days?
It is going great guns. I had the privilege of working with some of the greats in the industry such as Bharathi Raja, Mani Ratnam, Sivaji Ganesan and Rajinikanth. I have done 153 films as scriptwriter and director in the four languages — Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi.
But why aren’t you seen more often?
I am now busy with Kannada films. Despite that I have worked in the serial “Anandam”, produced by Sathyajothi Films, telecast on Sun TV. I’ve taken up seven films, including Lingusamy’s next which will be launched soon.
What do you think of today’s youth?
They are very talented and work hard. To cite an incident, I wanted director Sundar K.Vijayan to shoot a flashback scene for a serial. He could have done it simply; instead he and the crew travelled all the way to Thiruninravur, made the cameraman enter a 250-ft deep well with the help of a crane and shot the scene which showed a person emerging from the depths. That was splendid, I thought.
You have managed to remain in the field for so long. How?
The reason: I never argue with any director. If he does not like a particular scene, I will not ask him the reason and try to prove my point. I will give him a couple of scenes more to choose from. Perhaps, that’s why I’m never out of work.
You are working in serials too…
I have done nearly three serials and am working on two more. Director Bharathiraja is planning to do a serial titled “Niram Marum Pookkal”.S. R. ASHOK KUMAR
