Small town girl Piaa Bajpai of Poi Solla Porom fame speaks about her plans to make it big in tinsel town

Being new to the South, I didn’t know Ajit was such a big star until I reported for the shooting of Aegan

When gorgeous girl Piaa Bajpai starts talking about the success of her Kollywood debut Poi Solla Porom, there are no full stops. “I’m glad people love the film, despite it veering away from any formula,” she beams.

For someone who is used to putting her best face forward for commercials (think Cadbury ad with Big B and the Sonata one with M.S. Dhoni), Piaa knew that it wasn’t going to be easy when she singed up for Poi Solla Porom. “Acting is a lot of hard work. It isn’t easy to express when you are not familiar with the language. I had to concentrate on the words and on giving the right expression. I followed director Vijay’s instructions keenly. Imagine! I would be clearing doubts about certain words even after giving the shot!”

Piaa may not know the language, but she’s got loads of confidence and the will to make her dream come true. “I’m from a small town called Etawah in Uttar Pradesh. To people there, films are just entertainment. Nobody has even dreamt of being a part of the industry. But I dared to dream, and now I’m determined to make it big.”

After completing her course in computer at Gwalior, Piaa worked for a few months in New Delhi, before shifting base to Mumbai to chart out her showbiz plans. “I had no godfathers in the industry, but thanks to friends, my career took off. Since modelling was my stepping stone to films, I’m still open to doing commercials. The Cadbury and KFC ads brought me instant recognition. It was during the shoot for a commercial in Mumbai that I met director-producer Priyadarshan.”

Piaa, who is currently listening to many scripts, will soon be seen sharing screen space with Ajit in the Deepavali release Aegan.

In Hinglish, she continues, “Being new to the South, I did not know Ajit was such a big star, until I reported for shooting. There were thousands of people waiting to catch glimpses of him outside the set. And how grounded he is! Aegan is one of the best things to have happened to my career.”

Hailing from a family of teachers, Piaa has already learnt many lessons on life. “I’m a very positive person. I don’t tolerate people with negative vibes. I’ve realised that perseverance pays. So when it comes to work, nothing can stop me. Not even the fact that I’m a vegetarian doing a KFC ad! Imagine, I don’t even eat eggs, and there I was happily biting into big chunks of chicken. I puked so many times during the shoot. But I told myself, ‘This is work Piaa, come on…’ and I continued. It happens to be one of my best ads,” she chortles.
