Interview harshikaa udasi meets Ranbir Kapoor, tinsel town's latest lover boy, who gets lucky with three girls in Bachna Ae Haseeno
It's obviously a wellrehearsedanswerwith just enough betrayalof emotion.`Three heroines. Ranbir, which of them was the bestto work with?' is definitelynot the easiest question torespond to, especiallywhen one of them happensto be your girlfriend. But it is not unanticipated, and hence the answeris prompt."There's no way I canchoose among them. Ishared a great relationshipwith all ofthem and we had agreat time duringthe shoot," says theKapoor scion with aslight blush.
Never mind thetowel and derrierejokes that musthave given himnightmares post-Saawariya, this 26-year-old is back witha Yash Raj movie nextweek. Shedding his gullibleand loser lover boyimage, Ranbir is now out for thekill saying Bachna Ae Haseeno.Dad Rishi Kapoor shook a leg tothis fantastic number for his filmHum Kisise Kum Nahi and Jrtoo has definitely done a fabulousjob on the title track, witha little help from the film's stylistAki Narula and the threewomen - Minissha Lamba,Deepika Padukone and BipashaBasu. "I was a little apprehensiveat the thought of performingdad's number. But I eventuallydid it and the result is for you tojudge," says Ranbir.
Stages of love
Ranbir plays Raj in Bachna AeHaseeno. He is the quintessentialcharmer who sweeps womenoff their feet. The filmabout his relationships through 17to 30 years of age where he meetsthree different women. Quite lifelike?Says Ranbir, "We have allhad our share of relationships. Wehave been through the first crush, mere attractions and mature love. This film is a romantic comedywhich looks at these relationshipsthrough my eyes and what theyteach me about love and life."That's quite reminiscent of hisgrandfather's Mera Naam Jokerwhich Raj Kapoor proclaimed wasan onscreen ode to the relationshipslife had offered him. Butmention this to Ranbir and helooks hurt. "I couldn't even namemy grandfather's film in the samesentence as BAH. That was aclassic; it was autobiographical. This one's just a romantic comedy. There can be no comparison,"he says.
A lot has been said about theinvolvement of Katrina Kaif inthis movie, adding a fourth trackto the love relationship. "Yeswhen we started there was afourth chapter in Raj's life but ithad to be eventually droppedbecause we were exceeding thelength we wanted to keep themovie to," says Ranbir. KatrinaKaif need not despair. She hassigned up not one but two filmswith the Kapoor boy - PrakashJha's Rajneeti and Rajkumar Santoshi'sAjab Prem Ki Gajab Kahani.Meanwhile, Ranbir has alsobagged the next Karan Johar producedfilm by first-time directorAyaan Mukherjee. Tentatively titledWake Up Sid, Ranbir will beseen with Konkona Sen Sharma. It's his second film and thestakes are quite high. Admittedlyhe is nervous. "It's not becauseSaawariya didn't do well. My performancewas liked and I don'twant to let that go. In Saawariya,Sanjay handheld me through theentire film, but I have grown upwith Sid (BAH director SiddharthAnand). I have given a lot to thisfilm in terms of look, feel andcreative inputs unlike my firstwhere I was following Sanjay allthrough. The experience is richernow," he adds.
The Yash Raj banner may be avery prestigious one to work forbut it has had a bad run in the lastcouple of years. Last year, four ofits five films were ripped apart fortheir shoddy script. This year, ithas had the disastrous Tashanand a cold turkey by the name ofThoda Pyar Thoda Magic, againcriticised for pitiful scripting. That should also be giving himsleepless nights? "No, I may beworried because it's my film butnever on the account of Yash Raj.They have always made greatmovies. They are passionate aboutfilmmaking, have been the topnotch filmmakers and will alwaysremain so. It's me who needs toprove things here." Impish smileends interview.
Girls will just love this dungarees clad charmer.
