Moody (Alfred Molina) is an Iranian doctor living in America with his American wife Betty (Sally Field) and their child Mahtob. Wanting to see his homeland again, he convinces his wife to take a short holiday in Iran with him and Mahtob. Betty is reluctant, but she goes along. Upon arrival in Iran, her worst fears come true… Moody declares that they will be living there from now on. Betty is determined to escape from Iran, but taking her daughter with her presents a larger problem.

Orphan Shobha (Meena Kumari) lives with Charandas (Badri Prasad) and his wife. She is a beautiful woman and Charandas is on the lookout for a suitable groom.

Suddenly, one night, Shobha disappears and Charandas and his wife believe Sunder, one of her possible grooms, may have abducted her. When Shobha returns a few days later and says she was rescued by the rich Azaad (Dilip Kumar), Charandas is suspicious. He soon discovers that Azaad is actually a notorious bandit.

There’s a parallel love story of 1960s Punjab interwoven with the present day scenario. Veer (Saif Ali Khan) is in love with Harleen (Giselle).
