The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark index, Sensex, fell by 24.20 points to log its longest string of losses in nearly two years on selling in Maruti, Jindal Steel, Bharti Airtel and ONGC.

The 30-share index fell by 24.20 points to end at 19460.57.

The 50-issue National Stock Exchange index, Nifty, also eased by 5.65 points to end below the 5900-mark at 5897.85.

Rupee slumps

The rupee lost 35 paise to end at a nearly two-week low level of 53.85 on sustained dollar selling by exporters. The rupee commenced lower at 53.65 a dollar from the previous close of 53.50 at the interbank foreign exchange market.

It tried to mark a recovery immediately and touched a high of 53.55.

However, the rebound proved to be short-lived as the rupee later dropped to a low of 53.86.

The rupee finally settled at 53.85. —PTI
