Falling for fifth straight day, the Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark index, Sensex, lost 126 points to end at a 2-week low, with ITC shares plunging over 3.5 per cent. Overall, 23 stocks in the Sensex, including L&T, HUL, SBI, HDFC and Infosys, closed with losses. The index has now lost 258 points in five days.
Similarly, the National Stock Exchange 50-share Nifty index also declined by 36.50 points to finish at 5851.50.
The rupee weakened by 14 paise to close at 54.46 amid sustained dollar demand from importers.
It commenced strong at 54.15 a dollar against the previous close of 54.32.
However, the rupee fell back on weakness in local stocks and dollar demand from importers to end at 54.46.—PTI
