Hit by heavy selling in the last hour of trade, the Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark index, Sensex, fell by 239 points to close at a one-week low of 18801.64 on concerns over corporate earnings, renewed fears of early general elections and a weak global trend.
The 30-share index resumed lower at 19034.00. After trading in a narrow 100-point band, heavy selling in RIL, Bharti and the auto pack dragged the Sensex into the negative zone.
It finally ended at 18801.64, a loss of 239.31 points. On similar lines, the National Stock Exchange index, Nifty, plunged by 75.20 points to end at 5672.90.
The rupee weakened by 17 paise to close at an over three-week low of 54.43. —PTI
