MUMBAI: The stock markets breached another peak on Thursday with the benchmark Sensex closing above the 13500-mark for the first time on the back of a fresh rally in bank stocks.
In an otherwise erratic movement, bank stocks surged for the second consecutive day, helping the Sensex to touch a new intra-trade high of 13588.01.
Extending its gains to the sixth day in a row, it also ended the day at an all-time high of 13505.89, rising by 36.52 points over Wednesday's close of 13469.37. The National Stock Exchange's S&P CNX Nifty also hit a new trading high of 3900.40 before closing flat at 3876.85, fractionally up from the previous close of 3876.30.
After showing relatively less participation in the previous rally, bank shares remained in the limelight continuously for seven days. PTI
