Stock prices surged on Friday to close the Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark index, Sensex, above the 20,000-mark and a broader 50-Share NSE Nifty managing to close near the psychological 6,100 mark. The Sensex closed at 20082.62 with a gain of 143.58 points. Automobile stocks led the rally with a 2.20 per cent gain, followed by consumer durables, 2.03 per cent and FMCG 1.42 per cent. However the BSE metal and power stocks ended in the red.
Among the broader indices, the BSE 100 gained 0.68 per cent, BSE 200 was up by 0.64 per cent and BSE 500 closed up by 0.60 per cent.
On the National Stock Exchange (NSE), CNX Nifty closed at 6094.75 with a gain of 44.60 points. or 0.74 per cent. Nifty closed top its highest close since January 2011.
Despite good FII inflows, the rupee closed lower against the dollar. The rupee closed at 54.80 per dollar, 55 paise below its 54.25 close on Thursday.
