Logo will be withdrawn for non-compliance
TUTICORIN: The Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) under the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry is all set to introduce a quality logo, similar to the `ISI' and `Agmark' logos, exclusively for marine products exported from the country.
Speaking to The Hindu here on Tuesday, K. Vijayakumar, Assistant Director, MPEDA, said the logo, which is presently in the development stage, would be issued to the products of seafood processing /manufacturing units, once it was ascertained by MPEDA teams that the respective units were complying with the prescribed standards of Good Manufacturing Practices and Sanitary Standard Operation Procedures set under the guidelines for grant of the logo. Even after the logo was issued, performance of the units would be closely monitored to ensure that quality of the products was not compromised.
"Non compliances would lead to the withdrawal of logo." Mr. Vijayakumar urged the seafood processing units to adopt HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) based quality systems, which was essential to gain markets in the European Union and the U.S.
