NEW YORK: U.S. stock markets suffered heavy losses on Tuesday as investors recoiled at news of Europe's deepening debt crisis, tensions on the Korean Peninsula and the prospect of a U.S. bank overhaul.

The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average spent most of the morning trading session well under the symbolic 10,000-point mark, after clawing back a fraction of the 250-plus-point drop seen at the open. — AFP
