Signs MoU with HSA group; no investment from Apollo
HYDERABAD: Apollo group of hospitals and Hayel Saeed Anam group (HSA) will jointly run a $25-million `Apollo Hayel Super-specialty Hospital' at Taiz in Yemen by September this year.
The Chairman of the Apollo group, Prathap C. Reddy, and Executive Director of HAS, Shawki Ahmed Hayel, who is also the honorary Deputy Governor of Taiz State in Yemen, signed a memorandum of understanding here on Thursday formalising the partnership. The Apollo group will provide operational expertise, while there is no direct financial investment from its side.
Mr. Hayel said the HSA group, which had interests in many sectors, including oil, manufacturing, food processing, IT and exports-imports, would be setting up an oil refinery in Yemen in collaboration with Reliance Industries Ltd.
Heart vessel research
Addressing presspersons, Dr. Reddy said the Apollo group, in association with Johns Hopkins Medicare, would establish a research institute in Hyderabad to discover the "mischief-maker" causing heart diseases among young Indians. Heart vessels of Indians were smaller than those of people in the West, said Dr. Reddy.
The Apollo group would tie up with nanotechnology research institutes, Institute of Immunology and others for conducting the research. A few researchers from Harvard would work on it in Apollo's Hyderabad campus.
A large sample of those with family history of heart diseases including school and college students would be taken for research. "It is terrible to think that 50 per cent of Indians will have heart problems by 2010 and it goes up to 60 per cent by 2012," he said.
