KOCHI: Chairman of the Coir Board A. C. Jose has been elected chairman of Inter Governmental Group on Hard Fibres, FAO. Mr. Jose was elected at a joint meeting of the IGG held in Rome on February 1, said a press release here.
Mr. Jose represented the Indian coir sector at the meeting on `hard fibres.' He is the first Indian to hold this post.
The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2009 as the International Year for Natural Fibres.
The IGG will spend around US $2.5 billion for the growth of the coir sector across the globe.
Apart from India, coir-producing countries such as Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam stand to gain by this.
