A 23-year-old man and his parents were gunned down by their neighbours following an altercation on a longstanding dispute over parking space at Jaitpur in South-East Delhi on Wednesday night. The victim’s family has accused the police of inaction despite repeated complaints against their neighbours in the past.

The accused, later identified as Beer Singh and Sachin, were arrested on Sunday. They had fired 20-25 rounds to allegedly kill as many persons as possible from the family. “The walls and the main door of the house were riddled with bullets,” said a police officer.

According to the police, the assailants and the victims had in the past three months fought on several occasions over the issue of parking of their vehicles outside their houses. Two cases had earlier been registered at the Jaitpur police station in this regard.

“On Saturday, Beer Singh had an argument with the victims after which he along with Sachin and others decided to eliminate the family members,” said the officer, adding that they already had country-made firearms with them.

“The accused went on a killing spree around 10-30 p.m. They first attacked Amit, a family member they spotted out of the house, and then his mother Shanti Mishra and father Om Prakash Mishra, who came out of the house hearing the gunshots and then their son’s screams. The assailants then fired several bullets at the house..”

Amit’s brother Sujit who was walking towards his house escaped unhurt as he took cover after he spotted the duo firing at his family members. During the melee, Sujit’s wife peeped out of the door to check on her husband and she was also fired upon. However, she managed to shut the door in time,” he added.

Sujit alerted the police and a police control room van reached that spot. Amit, Om Prakash and Shanti were rushed to All-India Institute of Medical Sciences where Amit was declared brought dead on arrival and Om Prakash and Shanti succumbed to their injuries.

The shooting has left the area residents terrified. Although they remained tight-lipped over the incident, many of them disclosed that they had witnessed fights between the two sides on several occasions.
