Five accused will be produced in Thalassery court

Eight others remanded in Kannur Central Jail

KANNUR: Officers of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) probing the terror recruitment case registered by the Edakkad police left for Bangalore on Wednesday to seek the custody of five accused in the case now in Bangalore jail in connection with the blast there.

The JIT led by Deputy Superintendent of Police V.K. Akbar left for Bangalore to secure the custody of K.P. Abdul Jaleel from Kadachira here, P. Mujeeb from Chakkarakkal here, U.V. Badaruddin from Ernakulam, Abdul Jabbar alias Sattar from Muttannur, Ernakulam, and Sarfraz Nawaz from Pallikkara, Ernakulam to be produced before the Additional Sessions Court at Thalassery on January 1.

Judge K. Babu had on December 18 issued a production warrant to produce the five accused in the case who were in the custody of the Bangalore police.

Custody of Nazir

When contacted Mr. Akbar told The Hindu that the team would also approach the Bangalore Additional Chief Judicial Metropolitan Magistrate Court to secure the custody of Thadiyantavide Nazir and Shafas Shamsuddin, now in the custody of the Bangalore police after they had been handed over to it following their capture by the Bangladesh Rifles on the Indo-Bangladesh border earlier this month. The duo is also accused in the terror recruitment case registered by the Edakkad police.

The five of the accused in the terror recruitment case had not so far been produced before the Thalassery court where the trial proceedings in the case had begun. Eight of the accused who had been produced earlier were remanded in the Kannur Central Jail.
