Airport Advisory Committee has requested the district administration to take up land acquisition for the expansion of Tiruchi Airport in two phases and expedite the process of acquiring the patta lands, according to committee chairman P. Kumar, MP. Airports Authority of India has sought about 510 acres of land for the next phase of expansion of the airport, which includes expansion of the runway from 8,000 to 10,000 feet initially, and to 12,000 feet ultimately.
Of the total land sought, about 186 acres were dry land, 116 acres wetland, 164 acres Defence land, and 40 acres poromboke.
The district administration has already approached the Defence Ministry seeking the transfer of lands. Defence authorities were said to have turned down the request initially.
However, the issue was taken up with the Defence Minister by Mr. Kumar recently.
Meanwhile, speaking to reporters after chairing the advisory committee meeting on Saturday, Mr.Kumar said the committee has requested the district administration to expedite the process of acquisition of the 305 acres even while efforts were on simultaneously to get the Defence land.
The administrative sanction for the land acquisition is expected to be issued by the State government within the next few days.
