For the second consecutive day at the Congress ‘Chintan Shivir’ in Jaipur on Saturday, Telangana statehood issue did not figure in the discussions of the top leadership, at least in a formal way.
This was along expected lines, considering that the Congress top brass focussed its energy on youth and the weaker sections. Moreover, the elevation of Rahul Gandhi as party vice-president overshadowed several other issues. The only mention of the issue took place on Friday when Rajya Sabha member V. Hanumantha Rao, speaking at a group discussion on ‘Emerging political challenges’, said creation of Telangana should not be linked to the demand of other smaller States.
As a result of the pre-occupation of AICC leaders with other matters, Congress leaders from Telangana present at the ‘Chintan Shivir’ spent the day meeting some of them on the sidelines to get a sense of the high command’s thinking on the issue. But, their efforts to read the pulse of the Central leadership met with limited success.
