NEW DELHI: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday expressed “deep pain and anguish” over Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee president Rita Bahuguna Joshi’s remarks against Chief Minister Mayawati and the sequence of events that followed.

Ms. Gandhi’s anguish was communicated to the media by general secretary Janardan Dwivedi later.

Members of Parliament who met Ms. Gandhi during the course of the day said she was categorical that such remarks were “completely unacceptable.”
