HYDERABAD: The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has given an interim order banning Coca Cola and Pepsico drinks in all educational institutions, both private and Government.

The orders were issued by the SHRC, headed by Justice B. Subhashan Reddy, pending further inquiry on August 17 when the Commissioner, Civil Supplies, and the managements of the two soft drink companies were asked to appear before it. The Commissioner was asked to implement the interim direction with immediate effect.

The commission passed the orders following a representation by the Jana Vignana Vedika, a people's science movement, highlighting the hazardous levels of pesticide content in the brands of the two soft drink companies as revealed by the Centre for Science and Environment. Meanwhile, Director of Institute of Preventive Medicine said that it was decided to direct all Government educational institutions not to allow sale of soft drinks in their premises .
