THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Railway Minister Lalu Prasad has assured Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan that he will intervene in the row over the formation of the Salem Railway Division.
The Chief Minister had complained that the current proposal would diminish the importance of the Palakkad division, during a telephone conversation he had with the Railway Minister on Wednesday night.
Mr. Achuthanandan also submitted that the formation of the Salem division, incorporating a large area under the Palakkad division, could eventually lead to the abolition of the Palakkad division.
Mr. Prasad assured the Chief Minister that no steps would be taken that would diminish the importance of the Palakkad division. The jurisdiction of the Salem division would be decided scientifically.
Law Minister M. Vijayakumar said the Railway Board was showing great injustice to Kerala by the manner in which it had bifurcated the Palakkad division to form the Salem division.
