In a daring robbery at Gajjelavaripalle near Chowdepalli about 70 km from here on Monday, unidentified assailants who struck at a relatively isolated house, fatally slit the throats of an aged couple and decamped with the booty.
Reports reaching here said the gruesome tragedy occurred when Krishnamurthy Chetty (70), who runs a fair price shop and a money-lending business, came out of his house late in the night to switch on the borewell motor to let the people in the neighbourhood collect water.
The assailants allegedly barged into the house and forced his wife to open the steel cupboards. After robbing the house and snatching whatever she was wearing, the miscreants allegedly slit her throat. They were about to flee when the old man rushed in hearing her cries only to meet with the same fate as his wife.
The incident came to light only around 11 a.m. when the couple’s relative, growing suspicious when the couple failed to answer phone calls, alerted another relative living in the same village.
