Brandishing kirpans and sticks, rival groups clashed at the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee headquarters inside Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib here on Thursday, leaving at least 10 persons injured.
The incident took place around 11 a.m. when Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) Delhi unit president Manjit Singh G.K. and his supporters reached the DSGMC office to take part in a meeting of the Executive Board of the Committee. However, it is alleged that supporters of DSGPC president Paramjit Singh Sarna raised objections to their participation.
In his complaint to the police, Manjit Singh alleged that he had received a formal invitation to attend the meeting. Accordingly he along with two other elected members of the Committee, Amarjit Singh Pappu and Satnam Singh, and other special invitees reached the venue around 10-30 a.m.
However, it is alleged that they were not allowed to enter the office. This led to an altercation between the two sides, leading to the violent clash. Each side has accused the other of having indulged in violence,
Mr. Manjit Singh sustained injuries on the head and other parts of the body. His five associates were also injured.
“Four persons from the rival faction also sustained injuries in the fight. We have got all the injured medically examined,” said a police officer.
Apprehending further trouble, Mr. Manjit Singh and his associates were taken to the nearby Lohia Hospital, while those from the other side were sent to Safdarjung Hospital.
Mr. Manjit Singh claimed that Thursday’s meeting was called to discuss the contentious issue of Gurdwara Bala Sahib Hospital in which the Economic Offences Wing of the Delhi Police has already registered a case.
For its part, the rival faction alleged that Mr. Manjit Singh’s supporters indulged in unprovoked violence.
