MADURAI: Recreation clubs functioning in southern districts were being monitored by special police teams, said Inspector General of Police (South Zone) S.S. Krishnamoorthy here on Friday.

Two days ago, following a tip-off, a team conducted surprise checks in a private recreation club in Sivakasi and recovered Rs. 8 lakh allegedly used for gambling.

About 25 persons were arrested and fines imposed as per the law, police said.

It had come to light that many clubs obtained licence under the guise of ‘recreation club' and permitted gambling, Mr. Krishnamoorthy told ‘The Hindu.'

Mr. Krishnamoorthy said that all key officers in the south zone had been told to closely monitor the ‘recreation clubs' in their districts.
