TIRUCHI: Modernisation of the over 80-year-old Golden Rock Railway Workshop at a cost of Rs. 90 crore has been set in motion with the Southern Railway General Manager Deepak Krishan laying the foundation stone for the major project here on Friday.
A modern laboratory is to be established at a cost of Rs. 2.5 crore inside the workshop as part of the modernisation programme for material testing that is being done in Chennai at present.
Modernisation will enhance the wagon production capacity to 1,000 wagons a year, besides enabling it to carry out periodic overhaul of 150 diesel locos per annum from the present 120. The capacity to overhaul air-conditioned coaches will also double from 120 to 240 per annum. An official said the modernisation work would be completed in two years.
