Rahul ideal choice for PM, says Manmohan

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday gave fellow Congressmen much to chew on by suggesting that Rahul Gandhi would be an ideal choice for the Prime Minister’s post after the 2014 elections.

Responding to media queries on board the special PM’s aircraft on his way back from the G-20 summit in St. Petersburg, Dr. Singh added, for good measure: “I would be happy to work for the Congress party under the leadership of Rahul Gandhiji.”

The statement by Dr. Singh was clearly well-thought-through and not off the cuff. It is interesting that it comes against the backdrop of mild speculation recently in some quarters suggesting he may have to be projected as PM for a third term if Mr. Gandhi does not decisively agree to step in. Also, on a few occasions in the recent past, Dr. Singh has indicated that he would want Mr. Gandhi to join the government. Mr. Gandhi, on his part, has steadfastly signalled he was happy...
