Madurai Corporation officials on Friday sealed the premises of a building under construction here for deviating from the original building plan.

A team from the civic body inspected the place (Door No.98, South Masi Street, Ward 85) belonging to Devangar Sathiram and locked the gate of the construction site, issuing a warning not to proceed with the work.

R .Nanthagopal, Corporation Commissioner, M. Rakkappan, Chief Town Planning Officer (CTPO), and A. Devadoss, Assistant Commissioner, made a spot inspection. "They got approval from the Corporation for a particular plan, but they deviated from it by going in for construction of a basement floor which was not specified in the original plan," Mr. Rakkappan said.

The sanction of the Corporation was required if any changes were to be made in the original plan, he pointed out.

The CTPO said that a second violation noticed was that adequate space was not left on four sides of the building.

"We have certified that the violation will endanger the lives of construction workers and people living in the vicinity. The premises has been locked and sealed," he added.

Officials said that the plan approval given by the Local Planning Authority and Corporation were violated.

The builder had originally got permission to build 12,150 square feet on the ground with two additional floors.
