: Several public and environmental organisations staged a fast sitting on the Amaravathy riverbank here on Friday demanding immediate steps to stem pollution of the river and seeking justice for the pollution-affected farmers and livestock.


Many members of the People's Livelihood Rights Movement, Tamil Nadu Environmental Movement, Amaravathy Environmental Protection Movement, Federation of Water Sources and Livelihood Protection Associations, Rivers Protection Movement and Tamil Nadu Cauvery Riverbed Protection Movement participated in the fast.

A farmer K. Velusamy led the fast in which the Tamilaga Vivasayigal Sangam district president M. Marappan, Lift Irrigation Farmers Sangam president Nallusamy, People's Livelihood Rights Movement general secretary P. Gunasekaran, and Amaravahty Environmental Protection Movement general secretary M. Thennarasu participated.


They sought that the district administration and the authorities concerned should prevent discharge of effluents into the Amaravathy, give adequate compensation to affected farmers, provide potable water to pollution-affected villages, establish a dialysis centre at the Government Hospital here, book those violating pollution control norms under the National Security Act and take all possible steps to prevent further pollution of rivers.
