Carnatic vocalist Bombay Jayashri has bagged an Oscar nomination, one of 11 for Ang Lee’s Life of Pi . Jayashri has been nominated in the Original song category for ‘Pi’s Lullaby’ along with composer Mychael Danna.

Congratulating the Carnatic vocalist, Oscar-winner A. R. Rahman tweeted: “Congrats to Bombay Jayashree. First ever Academy Award nomination for a Tamil song.”

The song plays at the opening and closing of the movie.

Working on the song, Director Ang Lee explained to Jayashri the mood and feeling the song should evoke. Jayashri notes in her blog that he told her: “A child sleeps not because he is sleepy, but because he feels safe.”

After Slumdog Millionaire swept the Oscars in 2009, Lee’s film has again brought an Indian story to the fore by garnering the second highest number of nominations at the 85th Academy awards announced today. — PTI
